Containing the land and buildings that once formed a "relocation center" for Japanese and Japanese-American citizens during World War II, the Manzanar National Historic Site serves as a somber reminder of how easy it is to forget American rights and liberties. Start with a trip through the interpretive center, where a short film and numerous exhibits tell the stories of the camp and some of its many temporary residents. Afterwards, drive the 3.2-mile loop that winds through the camp's ruins and also offers some great sights of the surrounding landscape. Isolated on the eastern side of the state, the site is midway between Sequoia National Park and Death Valley National Park, making it a great half-day trip if already in the area.
Park open daily dawn-dusk. Interpretive center open daily Apr - Oct: 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Nov - Mar: 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Free.
